Work just got a little more fun

I do residential window cleaning, so I like to keep at least one ear open while working around customers’ homes / my coworkers. I would normally rock the single earbud when on the job like most people, but when I saw these, I had to pick them up seeing the specific advantages. Now that they’ve been attached to my skull for close to 100 hours in the past month and a half, I figure it was time for a review.

These were a no-brainer for me, given the hours of podcasts I tend to go through. To me it was worth the sacrificing sound depth in favor of having both ears open, yet being able to hear my audio in both ears. This is the first pair of headphones in general that has allowed me to have quick conversations without even hitting pause.

Speaking of pause, I really appreciate the tactile pause / volume buttons. This was clearly a nod to the athletes they’re marketed towards, and it’s nice to not take off my gloves every time I need to pause, plus touch controls are useless in wet environments.

I can’t stress enough how comfortable these are. I had no clue how snug this type of “bone conducting” headphone would be on my skull, but they feel weightless. I wore these for 6 hours straight on a job, and they didn’t bother me at all.

Now for sound quality, the consensus among reviewers is pretty clear on these, and I would echo that. Don’t even attempt electronic music. Heavier rock / metal is quite doable, you’ll definitely get good vocals / mids, just know these do vibrate a lot with fuller sounding music and can feel a little odd especially at high volumes. You’ll probably be pleased with anything acoustic. Podcasts / talk are the biggest win byfar with these.

The case these come with is quite nice. I’m a little surprised they didn’t find a way to put a battery into the case given the easily accessible magnetic contacts. It’s not a deal breaker or anything, but the charging is proprietary, albeit ridiculously fast, but you are beholden to a single cable as your lifeline, so as long as you don’t forget the cable for any long trips, running out of juice shouldn’t be an issue. There have been days where I hastily plugged these in for 20 minutes before work after forgetting, and that was enough for them to go from “battery low” to “battery high” (those are just the voice prompts, I would guess it went from around 30% to 80%). Just hold on to that cable for dear life.

Overall these headphones are well worth the money if you know what you’re using them for.

Shokz after AfterShokz

I was an early adopter of the bone conductance headsets, tracing all the way to the original Aftershokz headset. While the company is reAirForce Talon SSnamed simply Shokz, the product has vastly improved.

For voice-only applications, the sound quality is more than sufficient, both in terms of the microphone and the “speakers.” This also applies to listening to audible books and podcasts.

For music, however, one may find the bass a little lacking. With a tone generator, I can tell that a pure sine wave at 90 Hz is barely noticeable. This inspired me to use an equalizer to try to reproduce how music sounds like using a Hifiman Ananda driven by a humble Fosi DS1 amp. If I set the equalizer to start to roll off at 90 Hz (0 db) and down to -36 db at 36 Hz, then the audible experience is *about* the same.

In reality, the OpenRun Pro does not sound quite as tinny because some lower frequencies can still be felt, but not heard. There is no easy way to configure the equalizer to quite reproduce this effect on a strictly air pressure wave headphone.

If someone is expecting the same kind of sound quality as a normal headset in the same price range, there will be disappointment. If I want to really enjoy my music, the OpenRun Pro is definitely not my first choice. In a quiet room, the Hifiman Ananda + Fosi DS1 combo is hard to beat. In a noisy environment (vacuum cleaner, leaf blower, impact wrench, etc.), the Sony WF-1000XM4 with ANC or the Etymotic ER4XR are my choices.

So when do I use the OpenRun Pro?

When I just need some music “in the background,” especially when I am on the move. In a normal office, the OpenRun Pro sounds the best when it is at the medium level. Cranking up the volume seems to lose the balance between the high and low frequencies because the low frequencies are not as easy to reproduce/perceive. Some slow ambient music played through the OpenRun Pro really helps me get through a day of office work.

Depending on the volume and genre of the music, I can carry on a conversation with my colleagues without pausing the music. Unlike the ambient mode of the Sony WF-1000XM4, there is no electronic pass through with distortion, conversations are just as natural as without wearing the OpenRun Pro.

The OpenRun Pro is comfortable, too. I can wear it all day without feeling any discomfort. I also wear prescription glasses! As much as I enjoy the Ananda, WF-1000XM4 and the ER4XR, none of them is an all-day kind of headset (especially on a hot day). The battery life of the OpenRun Pro is superior, the battery level is still “medium” at the end of a long 12-hour work day (but I don’t play music the entire 12 hours, although the headset is on all the time).

Another benefit of the OpenRun Pro is that even when I am not listening to music, all the notification tones are played via the headset while I can hear everything in my surrounding. For example, in a meeting, I pause the music (some people speak very softly), but I leave the OpenRun Pro on. This way, I can get a calendar notification, but no one but myself hear it.

I’ve heard about these from friends and fellow workout enthusiasts for a long time. I’m always skeptical about products in relation to audio.

Comfort: They take some getting used to, but you get to the point where you legitimately don’t notice them. I have the full size model and I was concerned about the gap on the band and my head, I don’t like a lot of movement with headphones and these stick to their form without causing too much pressure.

Weight: These are super lightweight, they aren’t heavy, and do not weigh you down.

Sound quality: Do not expect the sound quality of Bose or Sony Headphones. Keep in mind, a studio style headset has a very specific purpose, these do not follow that purpose. You are meant to have a high quality sound delivered to you, while being able to hear the ambient background. For what they are, the sound is solid.

What’s in the box?: The headphones, case, charging cable, documents, and a headband. All self explanatory, the only exception for me was the headband. I thought it went to the headphones themselves, but it’s just to keep your hair out of the way if you have long hair, don’t look too far into it like most people did.

Overall I think this fits the bill for its intended purpose, I like them, I think they are worth the money.

Kurze Vorgeschichte: Ich hatte vor gut einem Jahr die günstige Version der Shokz geholt und war brutal enttäuscht. Es klang alles unschön und matschig. Es war einfach nichts, für was ich gute 120€ auszugeben bereit war.

Bei den Black Weeks waren dann die OpenRun Pro für 139€ im Angebot und ich gab dem System nochmal eine Chance. Dieses Mal wurde ich überzeugt! Evtl hat sich mein Anspruch durch die klare Aufgabenstellung an die Kopfhörer aber auch etwas angepasst…

Die Shokz kommen in einer sehr schönen Verpackung. Beim Unboxing bekommt man schon einen Vorgeschmack auf die sehr hochwertig anmutenden Kopfhörer. Eine erste Anprobe war nur maximal eine Minute lang ungewohnt, die Kopfhörer sitzen sauber vor dem Ohr mit einem sehr angenehmen Druck auf die Haut und die darunterliegenden Knochen. Das wird auch nach zwei Stunden nicht unangenehm!

Die Kopfhörer sind mit einem sehr angenehmen Silikon überzogen und unempfindlich gegenüber Spritzwasser und Schweiß, einfach nach dem Tragen mit einem feuchten Tuch abwischen.

Die Tasten (laut/leise mit Multifunktionen auf der rechten Seite und Anruf annehmen/Play&Pause auf der Linken Seite) sind einfach zu erreichen, mit spürbarem Druckpunkt.

Ich verwende die Kopfhörer primär beim Laufen. Dabei höre ich Podcasts, Hörbücher oder bei Twitch-Streams zu. Also prinzipiell viel normales Reden. Mir gefällt dabei, dass die Gehörgänge nicht durch Stöpsel verschlossen sind. Es sammelt sich kein Schweiß im Gehörgang und man hört also auch die anderen Verkehrsteilnehmer, wobei hier keine Reizüberflutung stattfindet. Ich kann problemlos zwischen den Geräuschen aus den Kopfhörern und der Umgebung unterscheiden.

Auch die Akkulaufzeit ist super, soweit ich das momentan beurteilen kann, ich lade nach ca. 4 Stunden Nutzung, wobei da die freundliche Stimme beim Start der Kopfhörer mich immernoch mit “Welcome to Shokz! battery medium” begrüßt. Ein weiteres Feature ist die Möglichkeit zwei Geräte gleichzeitig zu koppeln und zu verwenden. Das funktioniert echt toll, wenn man es einmal mittels App aktiviert hat.

Was leider immernoch ein Manko ist, ist das einfache Musikhören. Da kommen die Shokz leider bei weitem nicht an gewöhnliche, sogar sehr günstige Kopfhörer ran.

Nochmal zusammengefasst:

Pro:
– angenehm zu tragen
– verstopfen nicht den Gehörgang, man hört also auch die Umgebungsgeräusche
– sind definitiv laut genug für den Träger, umstehende Personen hören davon nichts
– superschnelle Bluetooth-Verbindung (connected innerhalb 2 Sekunden nach dem Anschalten) mit bis zu zwei Geräten parallel
– Akkulaufzeit mehr als ausreichend

Contra:
– Es werden hauptsächlich mittlere Freuqenzen übertragen. Perfekt für Sprache, aber beim Musikhören ist kein Klangwunder zu erwarten.

Für meinen Verwendungszweck sind die Kopfhörer phänomenal, ich würde sie auf jeden Fall wieder kaufen!

Pour la course à pied, parfait. Ne bouge pas, autonomie importante, très bon son. Au sujet du son, certains sur YouTube regrettaient une qualité moyenne de ce casque. Franchement, à l’écoute, c’est du très très bon. Basses pas exagérées, aigus un peu en retrait, mais c’est normal vu le mode de transmission, et le son, c’est mon métier. Mais ce n’est pas non plus ce casque que j’utiliserais pour le mixage de mes musiques…. Pour le vélo, le résultat est un peu plus mitigé dans la mesure où avec la vitesse, le bruit du vent dans les oreilles vient en concurrence avec le son du casque. Reste la possibilité de mettre du coton mais là, on perd la perception auditive de l’environnement routier… Mais comme le législateur, dans son infinie sagesse, ne voit pas la différence entre les casques à transmission osseuse et ceux que l’on introduit dans l’oreille, il a préféré tout interdire…

Je me suis résolu à acheter un casque Shokz après que des intras d’autres marques m’aient lâché les uns après les autres dans des délais parfois très courts. Je ne le regrette pas : même si la qualité du son est très légèrement inférieure à celle de bons intras (si vous n’êtes pas à la recherche du son parfait ça conviendra très bien), pouvoir profiter de sa musique en courant tout en entendant les sons extérieurs est une expérience nouvelle et très agréable. La musique vient se déposer comme une « nouvelle couche » sur les sons extérieurs mais ne vous empêche pas de les entendre, ce qui est sécurisant. La connexion à ma montre Garmin est vraiment aisée, le casque est confortable. Reste à voir sa durée de vie. Le seul point éventuellement négatif que je vois : si vous courez dans des environnements très bruyants, il peut être difficile d’entendre la musique et je ne recommanderais pas de la pousser à des niveaux très élevés pour couvrir le bruit extérieur, par souci de préservation de l’oreille. Le casque est aussi un peu cher mais il vaut le coup.

Erstaunliche Kopfhörer!

Ich war sehr skeptisch als ich von den Shokz Knochenschalkopfhörern gelesen habe.

Ich brauchte ein paar neue Kopfhörer für meinen “Sport” – Kiten mit Longboard und noch wärend ich überlegte ob ich diese KH ausprobieren sollte, hat sich eine Bekannte die Shokz Open Swim zum Kite Surfen gekauft.
Diese sind praktisch “baugleich” zum Open Run Pro und haben den selben Klang und Bedienung, einziger Unterschied: die “open Swim” haben noch einen eingebauten 4GB Speicher, so dass man die Songs direkt auf den Kopfhörer laden kann und keinen Zuspieler via Bluetooth benötigt. Und sie sind IP68 zertifiziert funktionieren auch im und unter Wasser!

Ich habe diesen Kopfhörer “probegehört” und getestet und war sofort begeistert.

zum Einen sind sie unglaublich leicht, sitzen perfekt, da sie nicht ins Ohr eingestöpselt werden, sondern vor und hinter dem Ohr sitzen und diese frei lassen, dass sie nach einer Weile überhaupt nicht mehr wahrgenommen werden und man vergisst dass man sie auf hat. Sie verrutschen auch nicht bei Bewegung, und wenn doch, dann nur minimal, ohne dass das dadurch klangliche Veränderungen gibt, da sie nicht wie ein In-Ear KH 100% perfekt sitzen müssen um DEN perfekten Klang abzuliefern!

Zum Anderen ist der Klang dennoch brilliant. Ich habe nicht gedacht dass er derart gut ist.
Und darann dass ich jetzt meine Umwelt immer noch höre und alles mitbekomme, muss ich mich erst noch gewöhnen. Es ist, als hört man die normalen Strassengeräusche und die Musik ist wie eine virtuelle Überlagerung die man nur selbst hört… quasi “Virtual Akkustik Reality”, aber die Musik dennoch klar und deutlich. Man muss es erleben um es zu verstehen.

Kleine Abstriche:

1) “bassgeile” Benutzer sollten vielleicht die Finger von diesen KHs lassen: Ab einem bestimmten BassLevel fangen die KH an spürbar zu vibrieren und das ist am Anfang sehr verstörend. Aber nach einer Weile blendet mein Gehirn das weg und es fällt mir nicht mehr auf. Meine Hörgewohnheit ist sowieso eher Mitten und Höhen betont und Bass schwebt nur im Hintergrund mit.

2) Das Ladekabel ist ein USB …. aber auf Seite des Kopfhörers hat es einen magnetischen 2 pol Clip Stecker der automatisch richtig sitzt. Aber da es ein spezielles Kabel ist, sehe ich das Problem: Wenn Kabel weg oder vergessen … dann nix Musik… denn Kopfhörer kann nicht geladen werden!
DAS ist eher schlecht. Allerdings scheint es etliche Anbieter zu geben, die diese Kabel als Zubehör für wenig Geld anbieten und es scheint auch Adapter zu geben die man einfach auf ein Standard USB / USB C Kabel steckt und schon kann man auch ein normales Kabel nutzen.

Die angepriesene Spieldauer von enormen 10 Stunden mit einer Akkuladung wird nicht ganz erreicht, aber 8 Stunden sind drin und dann ist bei wenigen Minuten Ladezeit der Kopfhörer wieder für einige Stunden aufgeladen. Die Schenellladefunktion ist wirklich gut!

Bisher ist das der beste Bluetooth Kopfhörer die ich hatte – mal sehen wie lange er das bleibt und ob er den hohen Kaufpreis auch durch Haltbarkeit und lange Lebensdauer, also hohe Nachhaltigkeit auch rechtfertigt!?

Edit: Ein schwerer Abstrich:
Der Bluetooth Empfang bei Kopplung mit meinem Mobiltelefon (LG G5) ist extrem SCHLECHT. Wenn ich das Telefon, in meinen vorderen Hosentaschen oder in meiner Jackentasche trage und den Kopf bewege (rechts, links, hoch und runter) gibt es ständig Verbindungsabbrüche und alle paar Sekunden meldet der Kopfhörer “Connected” … das ist extrem nervig und war bei meinen alten Kopfhörern nicht so.
Einen Stern Abzug!

Non, entre le manque de précision des aigus et les basses anecdotiques, la qualité audio n’est absolument pas, mais vraiment pas du tout comparable à des airpods, sony wf ou wh pour ne citer que ces modèles et pourtant, il s’agit désormais de mes écouteurs préférés, même en dehors de la pratique sportive. La raison est simple: le confort. Qu’est ce que c’est plaisant de profiter de la musique sans encombrer mes pavillons ou mes conduits auditifs, et sans me couper en permanence de mon environnement. Pour des écoutes purement audiophiles je leur préfèrerai évidemment d’autres modèles mais pour tout le reste, je suis absolument conquis par la proposition de shokz.
